Gustavo Fernandez and Shingo Kunieda end Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid's winning streak in the Wimbledon championship match.
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid's effort to capture an 11th straight wheelchair doubles Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon was foiled by Gustavo Fernandez and Shingo Kunieda.
In the final match on Court Three, the second seeds upset the top-seeded British team 6-3, 6-1.
Hewett and Reid hadn't lost a grand slam final together since Wimbledon in 2019.
On match point, Hewett's double-fault sadly put an end to their dominance.
Hewett will face first seed Kunieda of Japan in the singles final on Sunday after defeating Argentine Fernandez late on Friday night in the semifinal.
They've been trying to defeat us for a while, but obviously yesterday was a big day for us, Hewett remarked.
We last suffered a Grand Slam defeat here in 2019.
It was difficult to get back up and walk about today, but I will always remember that day as a great one, he continued.
"Today was challenging because yesterday was a significant day for me, a wonderful day that I'll never forget. However, we'll come back the next year.
Hewett and Reid won their ninth consecutive major title in June when they defeated Fernandez and Kunieda in the French Open final.
"Gordon and Alfie are the best wheelchair team in wheelchair history," stated Kunieda.
We encountered a tremendous challenge, but we overcame it. I'm ecstatic.
