The United States exceeded the previous mark for the world swimming championships by winning eight additional medals on the final day to finish with 45.

To round up competition, the U.S. won gold in the men's 50-meter backstroke and the women's 4x100-meter medley relay.

Both the men's medley relay and Hunter Armstrong's 50-meter back finished in second place.

Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant finished second and third in the 400-meter individual medley, which was won by 15-year-old Canadian Summer McIntosh.

Bobby Finke came in second place in the 1500m free behind Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri, who set the second-fastest time of history (in an American record time).

Erika Brown, who had previously won nine medals in relay competition, tied for third in the 50-meter free, giving her her first individual triumph at a world championship.

With her victory in the splash and dash competition, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden broke Michael Phelps' record by earning her 18th individual world championship medal overall.

Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte won the 50-meter breast event to win her first global title in nine years.

Meilutyte astonished everyone by winning the 100m breaststroke at the Olympics at the age of 15. In 2019, she briefly went into retirement.

The Americans, who have won the most medals overall at every Olympics and World Championship since the dubious East German era ended in 1988, were expected to dominate this week.

Some of the top swimmers from Australia, Canada, and South Africa withdrew from participation or curtailed their schedules before to their quadrennial Commonwealth Games later this summer.

By winning all four of her events and placing on Friday, Katie Ledecky once again led the Americans in the absence of her Australian rival Ariarne Titmus.

Caeleb Dressel left the tournament after taking home two gold medals for an undisclosed medical condition.

The podium was topped by previous champions Lilly King, Ryan Murphy, and Regan Smith.

Some examples of the youthful talent on the rise are Torri Huske, Alex Walsh, Grimes, Carson Foster, Michael Andrew, Phoebe Bacon, and Leah Hayes.

Léon Marchand, a 20-year-old Frenchman competing for Arizona State and coached by Michael Phelps' longtime mentor Bob Bowman, won the men's individual medleys.

The 100- and 200-meter freestyle competitions were won by 17-year-old Romanian David Popovici.

At the Tokyo Olympics at age 14, McIntosh finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley and the 200-meter fly. He lost to Ledecky this week in the 400-meter freestyle.

Hungarian Kristof Milak broke the 200-meter butterfly world record and added the 100-meter fly title in Dressel's absence, the Olympic gold medalist and record-holder.

Popovici and Milak present serious challenges for Dressel in two of his three individual Olympic title races.

They will have to wait until the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan, which will choose the early favourites for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, most likely in July of this year.
