Mickey Guyton lent her voice to a moving tribute to women in sports, their achievements, and
the ground they still need to cover at the 2022 ESPY Awards on July 20.
Several female athletes spoke on stage during the Los Angeles-hosted award show to honour the Title XI Act,
which was passed in 1972 and prohibits sex-based discrimination in any federally funded educational programmes.
Guyton's performance of her song from 2020 "The great tennis champion Billie Jean King questioned the crowd,
"How do you measure 50 years?" and then, "What Are You Going to Tell Her?" the victories?
in the number of difficulties you've overcome? How much more must be done? Title XI revolutionised the game,
but it's just the beginning." King said before Guyton began singing.
Later, Guyton cut short her moving rendition of the song about female inequality so that more athletes,
including Lisa Leslie, Brandi Chastain, and Carolyn Peck, could speak.
Later on, the audience heard statements regarding the still-necessary progress toward gender equality in
athletics from Jocelyn Alo, Layshia Clarendon, Chloe Kim, Oksana Masters, Allyson Felix, and Aly Raisman.
Soccer star Megan Rapinoe said, "To be honest, it's hard trying to persuade the world of our skill,
I mean come on, of our humanity, I mean come on, of our worth, I mean honestly, come on."
We are not your charity, and we are definitely not a justification for denying college athletes or transgender children equal rights.
Guyton changed into her song "Remember Her Name," saying, "Remember the girl that didn't let anything get
in the way / Remember the laughing / despite all the suffering / Remember her name," as more athletes joined her on stage.
During the powerful and moving scene, the Dolby Theatre audience rose to their feet to applaud and clap along.
